A dirty helmet smells, fogs up more and wears out faster. Cleaning it properly takes half an hour and makes a real difference. Here is how to do it without damaging anything.

What you need

  • Lukewarm water and mild soap (hand soap or a gentle shampoo).
  • Clean microfibre cloths.
  • A soft brush for the vents.

Avoid: solvents, alcohol, ammonia, glass cleaners containing ammonia and scouring pads. They can damage the paint, the shell and visor coatings.

1. The lining

If the lining is removable (most are), take it out carefully following the manual.

  1. Hand wash the pads in lukewarm water with mild soap.
  2. Rinse well and squeeze without wringing.
  3. Dry them in the shade, never on a radiator or in direct sun.

Some makers allow machine washing in a laundry bag: check the manual first.

2. The shell

  1. Lay a damp, warm cloth over it for a few minutes to soften dead insects.
  2. Clean with mild soap and a microfibre cloth.
  3. Use a soft brush on the vents.
  4. Dry with a clean cloth.

3. The visor

The most delicate part:

  1. Remove it if you can, following the manual.
  2. Wet it with lukewarm water, let it soak and wipe gently with microfibre.
  3. Never wipe it dry: you will scratch it.
  4. If it has a Pinlock, clean it only with water and a soft cloth. See Pinlock explained.

4. The strap and fastener

Clean the strap with soapy water and check the fastener works properly. If it is damaged, it may be time for a new helmet.

How often

  • Visor: whenever it is dirty.
  • Shell: after rides with lots of insects.
  • Lining: every few weeks in summer, every few months the rest of the year.
