Search for “women’s motorcycle helmet” and you will find pink, floral and glitter designs. Fine if you like them, but a helmet does not protect differently because it is marketed to women: the approval standard is the same for everyone. What often is different is size and head shape, and that is what to focus on.
What really matters
1. Size: measure, do not guess
Measure around your head with a tape, a finger’s width above your eyebrows. Many women fall between XS and M, and a helmet that is too big is dangerous: it moves in a crash and lets in wind and noise. Step by step in how a full-face helmet should fit.
2. Shell sizes: the spec nobody checks
The shell is the outer casing. Cheaper brands make one or two and pack out the inside for small sizes. The result: an XS with the outer size of an L, heavier and with more leverage on your neck. If you are a small size, look for helmets with 3 or 4 shell sizes.
3. Weight
A light helmet is less tiring for your neck, especially on long rides. Under 1,500 g is light for a full-face.
4. Long hair
- A low ponytail or a plait, not a high bun: a bun pushes the helmet forward.
- A neck tube or balaclava stops tangles and protects the lining.
- A removable, washable lining is a big plus.
5. Glasses
If you wear glasses, try the helmet with them on. Flip-front helmets make putting glasses on and off much easier: see the best modular helmet for glasses.
The helmets in our comparison that suit smaller heads
Shoei NXR2: the lightest, with 4 shell sizes
A claimed 1,390 g and 4 shell sizes, so it never looks oversized in XS or S. Expensive, but one of the best fits for small heads.
HJC RPHA 71: 4 shell sizes and a sun visor
Also 4 shells and 1,567 g, but with an internal sun visor, which the NXR2 lacks. Great for touring.
LS2 Storm II: light with a sun visor for less
A claimed 1,400 g and an internal sun visor. Our best-value pick. If you are a very small size, try it on in a shop first.
And the colour?
Whatever you like. One tip: bright or light colours (white, yellow, orange) are easier to see on the road than matt black. Most of these helmets come in several colours and graphics; pick yours on Amazon.
