Commuting means taking your helmet on and off several times a day, riding slowly, and parking anywhere. That changes what you need from a helmet.
Open-face, flip-front or full-face
- Open-face: the most comfortable and coolest. Quick on and off, and you see and hear traffic better. But it does not protect your jaw. Best for short urban trips.
- Flip-front: open at lights and stops, closed on the dual carriageway. Heavier, but the most versatile.
- Full-face: the most protective. If your commute includes fast roads, it is the safest choice.
What matters most for commuting
- An internal sun visor: low sun morning and evening is the commuter’s enemy.
- A micro-ratchet strap: far easier than a double-D when you do it up all day.
- Good anti-fog: at UK traffic lights in winter, visors mist up fast. A Pinlock is essential: see Pinlock explained.
- Weight: lots of short trips add up on your neck.
The ones we recommend
All the open-face helmets are in open-face helmets.
