Open-face motorcycle helmets: the ones we recommend

Cool, light and convenient in town: what a good open-face helmet offers, and what it cannot.

An open-face helmet protects your head but leaves your face and jaw exposed. It is the go-to helmet for commuting, scooters and short trips: quick on and off, well ventilated, and you see and hear traffic better.

Is it legal? Yes, as long as it meets an approved standard such as ECE 22.05 or 22.06.

What to look for:

  • A long visor: covers more of your face from insects, rain and stones.
  • An internal sun visor: very handy in town.
  • A micro-ratchet strap: easier when you take it on and off all day.
  • Shell sizes: more shells mean a better-proportioned helmet.

The limit: in a crash, the jaw is one of the areas that takes the most hits, and an open-face does not protect it. For fast roads and motorways, a full-face or flip-front protects far more.
