Goatskin sports glove with a dual-density knuckle protector and EN 13594 Level 1 KP certification. The all-rounder for commuting and weekend rides.

Why it stands out

The SP-8 is one of Alpinestars’ best-selling leather gloves, and the third version keeps the recipe: thin but tough goatskin, with just enough protection not to lose feel.

  • EN 13594:2015 Level 1 KP certification: KP means the knuckle protection is certified too.
  • Dual-density knuckle protector, harder on the outside and softer inside.
  • Bridge between the third and fourth fingers, which stops the fingers splaying and the seams splitting in a crash.
  • Stretch insert between palm and thumb for free hand movement.
  • Touchscreen index finger, so you can use the sat nav or phone without taking the glove off.

What to know

It is a short-cuff glove: it closes at the wrist and goes inside your jacket sleeve. It is more comfortable for everyday use, but protects the wrist less than a track-style gauntlet. It is not waterproof either, so for rain or winter you will need a second pair.

In the UK, gloves are not a legal requirement for everyday riding, but the Highway Code recommends them and you need suitable gloves for CBT and your bike test.

Our verdict

If you are only buying one pair and ride mostly in good weather, it is the most sensible choice: well protected, excellent feel and it lasts for years.
