Highlighted in orange: the winner of each measurable spec. Manufacturer data.
Certification: a draw
Both are EN 13594:2015 Level 1 KP and have touchscreen fingertips.
Ventilation: REV’IT! wins
The Sand 4 combines 3D mesh and goatskin, with vented TPR knuckles that channel air inside. It is one of the coolest gloves you can buy.
The SMX-1 Air v2 combines a leather and 3D mesh back, so it ventilates well, though a little less.
Palm protection: very close
The SMX-1 Air v2 has a leather palm. The Sand 4 uses PWR|Shield in the palm, a REV’IT! fabric with high cut and abrasion resistance, and adds a TPR palm slider that helps your hand slide on the tarmac instead of catching.
Price: Alpinestars wins
The SMX-1 Air v2 is one of the most affordable certified gloves.
Verdict
- Long rides in real heat or an adventure bike: REV’IT! Sand 4.
- Commuting and short trips on a budget: Alpinestars SMX-1 Air v2.
