Plenty of riders commute in ordinary trainers. In a crash they shred on the tarmac and do nothing for your ankle. Riding shoes are the middle ground: they look normal on the outside and have protection inside.

What sets them apart from normal trainers:

  • EN 13634 certification: tested for abrasion, cut and transverse rigidity (so the sole is not crushed if the bike lands on your foot).
  • Ankle protection: discs or reinforcements on both sides.
  • Reinforced toe and heel, and a reinforced gear-shift area.
  • Many are waterproof, with a breathable membrane, which matters in the UK.

Their limit: they are ankle height, so they do not protect your shin. For fast roads or long trips, choose a mid-height or tall boot. For commuting and spending the day off the bike, they are the most comfortable option.
