Arriving with wet feet ruins any ride, and in winter it chills your whole body. A waterproof boot has a membrane between the outer and the lining that keeps water out but lets sweat vapour escape.

The membranes you will see:

  • Gore-Tex: the best known and a benchmark for waterproofing and breathability.
  • Drystar (Alpinestars), T-DRY (TCX), Drytex (Forma): each brand's own membrane.

Tips to keep them waterproof:

  • Fasten the boot properly and wear your trousers over it: if water gets in from the top, no membrane will stop it.
  • Dry them at room temperature, away from radiators.
  • If they are leather, condition it now and then with a suitable product.

In the UK, if you only own one pair of boots, make them waterproof.
